Frequently Asked Questions
Consulting Services Frequently Asked Questions
Can we get a stand alone consulting service and then use it with a different web provider?
You sure can! One of the benefits of the Project Discovery, Website Audit, Website Prototype, and Consulting services is that you can take what we deliver to you and give your next web provider a head start. And of course, if you work with us on a full website project, your investment in that service is credited toward the total invoice for that project.
Why do you use WordPress?
WordPress is open source content management software and powers over 30% of all websites on the Internet, and over 60% of all sites that use a content management system. The project is contributed to by tens of thousands of developers all over the world and is growing from strength to strength. WordPress allows us to develop flexible and customisable websites to modern standards and observes web development best practices. Not only does it increase the quality of your final solution, but it reduces the investment required compared to a custom content management system.
Can we apply for a website support plan if you did not make our website?
Let's talk about it! Some websites are in such a state of disrepair that we may need to charge an onboarding fee to get it to the place where it could even handle a support plan.
We just need small changes to our existing site. Do you do that?
Each change on a site can have second and third order effects, both in terms of business goals and the technology of your site. So we provide a couple options for you: the first is to be on one of our support plans that offers unlimited changes. If that is not a good fit for you right now you can 'save up' your small changes and group them into a project.
Do you provide hosting or domain registration?
Although we do not provide hosting or domain registration as stand alone services, we do include it on any of our plans as long as your site uses best practices for media hosting (e.g. host videos on separate server).
Will you work on a site regardless of what web host it is on?
Long wait times, inexperienced support, incorrect answers, server downtime, restricted administrative access. These are just some of the pitfalls with most hosting we've seen (and we've worked with over a dozen). Because of GoDaddy's bad track record and poor customer service, we don't generally do work on GoDaddy hosting. We do offer our own hosting that is included on any of our support plans. Or we are happy to recommend other quality web hosts.
How will I know if anyone is visiting my website?
It is our practice to install Google analytics software on your new website so the data is tracked. Once you log into your Google Analytics account you can see a wide range of website statistics including: number of visits, page views, the amount of time people are spending on your website, and much more.
What is an interactive prototype?
An interactive prototype is a black and white version of your website that is designed to prove the functionality and features as they will work in the browser. No design elements are applied at this stage as the prototype is just built to allow all parties to make final decisions on the functionality.
We want our site to work well on mobile devices. Do you do that?
Great question. And we only do that. All our sites have breakpoints that are optimized for mobile viewing.
Do you do email hosting?
No we don't. We've found that we just can't beat the performance, security, and 24-7 support availability of Google's basic level in their G Suite offerings, which is around $6 / user when we checked last. You can see their detailed comparison for more info.
Why a quote? Why not just allow immediate purchase?
Because it is a benefit to you and to us, we don't allow immediate purchase of our services without us both having the opportunity to get to know each other. So the way our services store works is that instead of adding to a cart, you build a quote request. Once you're done, you'll have the opportunity to submit it to us. Once we've reviewed it, we'll probably have some clarifying questions (since every organization, web project and website context are different). Once those questions are answered, and if we both feel we're a good fit for each other, we'll be in a position to send you the final quote. Once you accept it we'll move into action.
Do you provide video hosting?
Getting video hosting right on a webserver can be difficult and resource intensive, so usually the best practices are for you to host your videos on a 3rd party such as YouTube or Vimeo. The exception would be a background video, for example on a home page, which are much shorter and less resource intensive and can be optimized more easily for good performance.
Support Plans Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be locked into a contract?
No long-term contracts or cancellation fees.
What does 'unlimited changes' mean?
For the type of changes, we mean anything that can be done in 30 minutes or less. For example, adding or editing content that you provide, configuring a plugin, or replacing an image. What do we mean by unlimited? Unlimited!
What is not included in 'unlimited changes'?
The unlimited changes does not apply to development sites or sites under construction. And if a task would take more than 30 minutes, it won't be included. We'd be glad to do custom development, custom design, content creation, or build a new site for you. But these are not included in the support plans. If you need this type of work, just let us know and we'll approach it as a separate project.
Do you offer volume discounts?
We sure do! If you own several sites, please just contact us with your details and we'll provide a quote.
I need a small change done but am on the Power tier and so have no unlimited changes. What do I do?
If you don't think the Freedom subscription tier is a good fit for you yet, you can just submit your changes to us one at a time or together as a mini-project.
I am on the Freedom tier but need a change done that is too big to be covered in the unlimited changes. What do I do?
If a task can't be done in the scope of the unlimited changes, just contact us for an estimate.
Mutual Agreement Frequently Asked Questions
What if we're not happy?
We will do our best to exceed your expectations. But we realize that things may not work out in spite of our and your best efforts. So if you are within your first 30 days, you can ask us to stop work and get a refund for what you've paid so far.
What happens if we want to add some content or features to the website while you’re building it?
While we want to be flexible and responsive to your needs, we also want to deliver what we promise within the time frames and budget you have agreed to. If you ask us to add new content or features to your website while we are building it, we will evaluate them with you. During that time we will work together to clarify the benefit to your web marketing as well as the impact to the project budget and timeline. After the impact to budget and timeline is clear, you will be able to accept or reject the updated budget and timeline. If you decline the additional content and/or features during the current project, we would be glad to do it after this project is complete.
What happens after the website is launched?
How long will it take to appear at the top of Google?
The time it takes for your different pages of your website to appear on page 1 of Google depends on a number of factors. It depends on your topics (the search phrases people are using to find your website) and your competition (the number of other websites that are also available for those search phrases). Nobody can truly say how long it will take for your website to appear at the top of search engine results pages (including people who actually work for Google), however there are a number of factors that can improve your chances. Building your website on WordPress is a good start as WordPress has some great Search Engine Optimization fundamentals built-in. Creating unique and interesting content on a regular basis for your website is also critical to increase your visibility by search engines. Launching your website and then forgetting about it is a surefire way to get lost in the noise.
We are happy to talk to more about your search engine strategy if we haven’t already.
